The wind picked up, howling as it buffeted the wooden sides of the cabin.
‘Adrian’
Adrian was staring past her reflection at the snowy yard surrounding the cabin.
‘Adrian, it’s going to be ok’
Adrian continued to stare, saying nothing. After a moment she closed her eyes, and leaned forward until her forehead touched the frigid glass.
Lily continued 'Nothing is going to happen, it’s gone, probably frozen to death miles from here. We can walk to Redstone tomorrow and everything will be fine. Look…Jen would…'
Adrian’s eyes rushed open. She sat up straight glaring. Her stoney gaze found Lily’s reflection. Adrian turned and rose.
‘Lily, Jen is gone, this isn’t some show for you to binge online. This is our lives. This is real. It’s really happening. Jen is gone and that thing…’ she stabbed her finger towards the window, that thing is still out there.’
Adrian looked back towards the window, where the blue of the sky grew ever darker.
‘It’s out there and it’s coming back, for us’
They stared at one another. Lily’s eyes glossed over in a wavering, pre-tear shine. Adrian’s eyes set hard, in a stoney glare. Both of their eyes widened. Adrian turned back to the window. Looking out past the cabin porch, over the red-stained snow and towards the forbidding pine forest.
A sound pierced the dark sky outside. It wasn’t the wind. No, the wind had died down, and this new sound was far too harsh, far too…hungry to be wind.
